Introduction
Children and adults have been watching cartoons with
sound since the 1920’s. Animation allows for more imaginative
storylines and incredible characters; mice can drive steamboats, animals
can talk, boys can fly away to imaginary worlds, and the possibilities
are endless. Most would argue that the images alone are what make
cartoons so intriguing. However, music also plays a big role in the
magic animation can create. Try watching a Tom and Jerry chase scene
on mute; it’s just not the same. Ever since the very early cartoons
like "Steamboat Willie", music has been incorporated into
animation to help tell stories and add to the humor. It began with
Carl Stalling’s work with early Disney and Warner Brothers cartoons,
and now has evolved into full-length animated feature film soundtracks
by composers like Alan Menken.
